the little bit I do to help the planet

Photography — the process results in a picture for your wall, a book of cherished memories, or maybe something you share with family and friends. Getting to the printed picture is a production process that involves not such nice things; but as a photographer I have proactively made certain choices to minimize my impact on the planet.

There is nothing too radical here. I should also point out that almost all of these choices provide immediate or long term reductions in my cost of business which translates into better value for my Clients. Helping the environment can make good economic sense.

Here are some examples of practices that I believe are environmentally beneficial:

1) DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & ON LINE GALLERY: Besides being the professional standard in photography today; digital photography eliminates the film negative and its processing. This eliminates a bunch of chemicals and the material used to create the negative. The On Line gallery eliminates the need to print proofs. Instead of printing you a bunch of proofs, many of which you’d not want, you simply look at the images on the internet or on a disc and select the ones you want. Reduced printing reduces chemicals, and waste, and you can think of the on line gallery as your ultimate proof book that can be easily shared.

2) I WORK OUT OF MY HOME: Since all of my work is on location there isn’t really a need for me to have a store front studio as is the tradition. Making my clients come to me for meetings seems awfully inconvenient to them anyway. Not having a studio means the elimination of heating, cooling, lighting, and materials of a whole new space thereby saving a lot of energy and building material waste. This also means I don’t have to drive somewhere everyday.

3) REUSE & RECHARGE: Cameras and in particular, flashes use lots of energy and can consume batteries at a maddening pace. I use all rechargeable batteries — reducing disposal.

4) CONSERVATION IN MY HOME & WORK SPACE: We use CFL bulbs, have a highly efficient wood burning stove that supplies about 40% of our home heat. Modern wood stoves are EPA certified to emit 3 to 6 grams per hour of particulate (smoke) and wood as a biomass is carbon dioxide neutral, and a resource that is renewable. The wood comes from dead trees, which if left alone would emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as they decay. Burning the trees emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as if the trees were left to decay. Cord wood comes from managed forests planted with new trees that then re-absorb the carbon dioxide.

5) TRAVEL BY CAR: Yes, I really can bring everything I need to your location including a medium step ladder in my car.

6) RECYCLING: We of course, separate and recycle… and are mindful of other eco-friendly personal practices.

7) SUPPORT OF ECO-FRIENDLY COMPANIES: Whether it’s milk from Stonyfield Farms, or Dreamhost web site hosting, where possible we opt to support eco-conscious companies.
